[Golf] Multiple Viking Golfers Finish in Top-10 of Baker Spring Invite
Lawrence, Kansas – The Grand View University men's and women's golf teams competed in the Baker University Spring Invite. The event took place at the Eagle Bend Golf Course. The women's team finished 2nd out of 4 teams, while the men's team finished 4th out of 9 teams.There were three ladies that finished in the top-10 finishers for the Vikings. Maria Mantilla (SR/Bogota, Colombia) finished at the top of the leaderboard for the Vikings by shooting a 165 (91-74). She shot 17 strokes better in her second round to finish in 5th-place. Kimberly Nelson (JR/Miri, Sarawak) ended the tournament 7th in the field, while Emily Wagner (SR/Casey, IA) trailed right behind Nelson in 8th-place. They shot a 169 (87-82) and 174 (89-85) respectively.Mitch Pfingsten (SR/Fairmont, Minnesota) finished in the top spot for the men's team. Pfingsten shot a 226 (74-75-77) for the event. He entered the final round with a share of the overall lead but dropped a few spots back to finish the tournament in, a still impressive, 4th-place.For the women, William Penn University sat atop the team leaderboard with an overall score of 626 (328-298). The top 4 individual finishers were all from William Penn, but it was Megan Rhoads who led the pack with a 155 (79-76) finish.On the men's side, Missouri Valley College took the lead at the completion of the second round of play and held on to it to finish the tournament. The Vikings shot a 906 (310-299-297) overall. Hamish Gorn of Missouri Valley ended the event atop the individual leaderboard with a 222 (79-70-73).UP NEXT… Both the Vikings men's and women's teams have faced adversity and a shortened play schedule due to the lengthened winter weather conditions around the Midwest. The next competitive events for both teams will be the Heart Championships. The men's team will travel to Galena, Illinois on March 29th to begin their 3-day tournament. The women's team, meanwhile, will travel back to Lawrence, Kansas on May 6th for their conference tournament.
